Since most of our Christmas traditions come from the Northern Hemisphere, celebrating mid-winter is the perfect time to embrace all those traditions that don’t exactly translate to a summer Christmas.
Get baking
Nothing like keeping the house toasty warm while also making all your favourite treats! Shortbread, sugar cookies, chocolate babka, mince tarts, gingerbread…there are literally hundreds of Christmas baked goods to choose from. Pick a couple, get your mates (or the kiddos) involved and spend an afternoon baking up a storm in preparation for your perfect mid-winter Christmas.
Mull your wine
Mulled wine is a Christmas tradition all around the Northern Hemisphere - it hits a bit different down here when it’s 25˚C on Christmas Day but give it a go while the weather is still cold. We’ve got a great mulled wine recipe but don’t be afraid to jazz it up a bit with extra spice or a nice orange liqueur.
Bonus tip: do it in the slow cooker and let it simmer all day long! Your house will smell amazing, plus you won’t have to stand over the stove stirring all day. You’re welcome.
Break out the jumpers
Get cosy in style (or lack thereof) with a Christmas jumper! If you can’t find one this time of year, hit up your favourite op shop and go for the biggest, chunkiest knit you can find, the tackier the better.
Cook up your favourite comfort foods
A roast would be the obvious choice, but we’re happy to opt for anything hearty. A big ol’ stew, a nice family-sized pie, bangers and mash—all great choices. But if you’re going the traditional route with a roast, don’t forget the puds, can’t have a proper roast without the Yorkshire puddings!
Round everyone up!
Now’s the best part - get your family, friends, coworkers, rugby mates, jogging pals, and anyone else you can think of to come round. And when they ask what they can bring, send ‘em to Henry’s!
